From the Pantry Shelf
As the early March winds blow across the island, there's nothing like a batch of these classic oatcakes to warm the kitchen and remind us of cozy Cape Breton afternoons with tea and good company. Simple, crunchy, and just the right balance of sweet and salt — straight from our table to yours.
This Week’s Recipe - Cape Breton Oatcakes
These Traditional Cape Breton Oatcakes are a staple in island homes — buttery, crisp like shortbread, perfect with butter, cheese, jam, or just on their own. A true taste of heritage.
Ingredients
For the Oatcakes:
3 cups rolled oats (or quick oats for finer texture)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 ½ cups butter, melted
¼ cup water (or a bit more if needed)
To Serve:
Butter, sharp cheddar, or homemade berry jam
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment.
In a large bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Pour in melted butter and water; stir until a dough forms (it should hold together but not be sticky — add a splash more water if dry).
Divide dough in half. Roll each portion between parchment to about ¼-inch thick.
Cut into rectangles or squares (traditional size ~2x3 inches). Place on sheets.
Bake 12-15 minutes until golden and crisp. Cool completely on racks — they crisp more as they cool. Don’t overbake for that perfect snap!
Pantry Tip
For extra crunch, use old-fashioned rolled oats instead of quick. Store in an airtight tin — they keep for weeks and taste even better day two.
Kitchen Story
My mother always had a tin of these on the counter, ready for visitors dropping by after a ceilidh. One bite, and you're back in a Cape Breton kitchen with the fiddle music lingering.
