Hello fellow Cape Breton lovers,
Every recipe has a story… and on the island, those stories run deep through generations of kitchens, kitchens filled with the laughter of family gatherings, the warmth of wood stoves, and the unmistakable flavors of home. From hearty Acadian stews to time-honored Scottish bakes and the ancient wisdom of Mi’kmaq cooking with the land and sea, Cape Breton’s table tells the tale of who we are.
We’re excited to continue the journey! Over the upcoming weeks, we’ll be sharing 10 more beloved traditional Cape Breton recipes. These build beautifully on the first collection, bringing in more Acadian soul, strong Scottish influences, and meaningful Mi’kmaq dishes that celebrate wild ingredients, sustainable harvests, and cultural resilience. Many come from cherished community cookbooks, family heirlooms, and heritage kitchens across the island.
Here’s a preview of what’s coming:
Rappie Pie (Pâté à la Râpure) – A classic Acadian layered casserole of grated potatoes, chicken or pork, and savory broth that bakes into golden comfort. A true labor of love and a staple at big family meals.
Fricot – Hearty Acadian chicken stew loaded with potatoes, carrots, onions, and light dumplings. Seasoned with summer savory, it’s the perfect one-pot warmer for those misty Cape Breton days.
Luskinikn (Mi’kmaq Fry Bread / Bannock) – Soft, versatile quick bread, fried or baked, that pairs perfectly with soups or stands alone. A cornerstone of Mi’kmaq cooking, simple and satisfying.
Three Sisters Soup – Nourishing Mi’kmaq-inspired soup featuring corn, beans, and squash—the “Three Sisters” grown together—along with potatoes and broth. A beautiful reflection of traditional Indigenous agriculture and harmony with the land.
Eel Stew – Traditional Mi’kmaq preparation featuring eel from the Bras d’Or Lakes, simmered with root vegetables, onion, and butter. A historic taste of Cape Breton’s waterways and Indigenous fishing heritage.
Fat Archies (Ginger Molasses Cookies) – Big, soft, chewy molasses-ginger cookies—sometimes called Moose Hunters. A beloved Cape Breton bake-sale classic with deep local roots.
Poutines Râpées – Acadian potato dumplings stuffed with salted pork, boiled and served with butter or molasses. Humble, filling, and full of old-country character.
Bannock with Berries – Mi’kmaq-style bannock studded with wild blueberries, cranberries, or raisins. Perfect for breakfast, tea time, or alongside a bowl of soup—highlighting foraged island bounty.
Cape Breton Scottish Meat Pie – Savory pie filled with seasoned ground meat (often with a local game twist like venison or moose), onions, and spices in a flaky crust. Ideal for ceilidhs and hearty suppers.
Apple Pandowdy or Rhubarb Crisp – Simple, rustic fruit dessert with local apples, rhubarb, or berries under a biscuit or crumb topping. Warm, comforting, and straight from Cape Breton farmstead traditions.
These dishes continue to celebrate the beautiful blend that makes Cape Breton cooking so special—Scottish roots, Acadian heart, Mi’kmaq wisdom, and the freshest gifts from our sea, soil, and forests. We can’t wait to dive into each one with you in the coming issues, complete with stories, tips, and that warm island spirit.
